ITINERARY AND ROUTE MAP FOR JOURNEY TO SRI LANKA

Itinerary for journey to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a beautiful, safe, cheap and pretty much easy-going country that offers a lot of sights that can be also seen in other countries of Southeast Asia. This island offers long beaches, tea farms, rice plantations, exceptional safari with wild elephants and beautiful historical sights. More about 'Why to visit Sri Lanka?' can be found in my blog.

I started my journey in Colombo, from where I took a train next morning to royal city Anuradhapura, which holds amazing and enormous dagobas. I took a bus from Anuradhapura to Trincomalee to spend few days on a beach and from there I headed to another royal city Polonnaruwa. Polonnaruwa offers historical sights but also the chance to go on a trip to national park Minneriya, where I've seen wild elephants for the first time in my life. I continued my journey to a mythical mountain Sigiriya, to cave temple in Dambulla and I ended up in a cultural center of Sri Lanka that very same day – Kandy. From there I took a train through mountains and tea plantations to serene Ella. On my way to south beaches I stopped in another national park Uda Wallawe and for a while immersed myself in true African nature, full of wild animals. I finished my journey on beaches in Tangalle and returned back on a train to Colombo.

I planned my itinerary as follows:

01 - flight to Dubai 15:35-00:40
02 - flight to Colombo 9:05-14:50, arrival
03 - train to Anuradhapura 5:35-9:20, royal city sightseeing

What I would do differently today

Everything that I planned for my journey to Sri Lanka came true. I wanted to plan a route that would include visiting two beach locations, two national parks with wild elephants, two royal cities and have a look around hills with tea plantations. Weather forecast for the time I was in Sri Lanka should change in opposite sides of country but I was very lucky and all that I witnessed was a clear blue sky. If I had few more days I would probably stop on a Mirissa beach on my way from Tangalle to Colombo. And I would also try my luck a bit harder and enquire more about train ticket through tea plantations to Ella, however I believe it is a task made for superheroes.
